Hi,I’ll be upgrading to a 225 gallon acrylic tank (it’s in the mail). 72W x 24D x 30H

I’ll have an Eshopps WD-300CS and a Fluval FX6 running on it.

Below is the list of the fish I’d “like” to have in it (expecting that I’ll end up with a subset of my list). I’d love to see opinions/feedback on whether or not it’s feasible to have this group together in my tank. Feel free to share a group out of this list that you think would work well together for me.

flag tail
red Oscar
peacock bass (Kelberi Tocantins
delhezi bichir
elephant nose
Clown loach

These four are moving from my 90g to the new 225g:
Electric blue acara
Redhead geophagus Tapajós
gold nugget pleco
Blue phantom pleco

*I’m aware of the concerns/risks of plecos with bichirs, open to more feedback.
*Also aware that the peacock bass may be too large for my tank, again open to more feedback on that.

Thanks!

I personally wouldn't add the Elephant Nose, Clown Loach or the Delhezi. The Elephant Nose and Delhezi may be too slow getting food. The Clown Loach grows slow so possibly be a risk to the Oscar or P Bass if the Clown Loach was swallowed.

I forgot to mention, I plan to purchase the flagtail, oscar, (almost certain I’ll get this two) and peacock bass (definitely on the fence with that) at small sizes...like 3” or less. I won’t put a clown loach in the tank unless it’s ~4” or larger (to prevent tank mates from snacking).

The slow eating of the bichir is a big concern, so it’s on my “not likely” list. Didn’t realize elephant noses were slow too!

thanks!

Elephant noses are also very very shy. Maybe no Bichir, and a few large catfish like Pictus. I am not to good with catfish, so don’t know large catfish. Bass are very aggressive, and if I were you, I would put 2 or 3, and get a small, aggressive catfish and maybe one more larger fish.

I have a Delhezi and a few other Polypterus in a 180 gallon with a large Datnoid. The Datnoid doesn't like the NLS Jumbo Carnivore pellets I feed them lol. Feeding Tilapia is a challenge so I have to add extra for the Bichir to eat. Elephant Nose imo should be kept in a specie only setup due to the food they except like frozen Blood worms.

Thanks for all the quick feedback!
I saw a pair of ~12-14” bichirs at my LFS today and couldn’t stop watching them, so wanted to explore if they’d work alongside other fish I really want. At the LFS they were with a 10’ oscar and a 14” peacock in a ~360g tank (so whole different thing than what I’m setting up).

Sounds like my original stocking plan was more on track...
1 flag tail (juvenile)
1 oscar (juvenile)
3-6 clown loaches (will only add if > ~4”)
1 catfish that will stay < ~16”

Along with the 4 moving from my 90g (each of these are about 5-6 inches):
Electric blue acara
Redhead geophagus Tapajós
gold nugget pleco (
Blue phantom pleco

Do you think it would be reasonable to add a juvenile Kelberi Tocantins peacock to this group and let them all grow together?

Still waiting for my 225 (3-5 more weeks)! I’ve settled on a set of tank mates that I think should work out well and have picked up a few of them. Also I’ve re-homed some of my smaller fish (some cories and a school of cherry & gold barbs).

In the last 2 weeks I picked up these fellas:
1 Tiger Oscar (~1”)
1 Flagtail (~3”)

They’re currently in my 90g with:
1 Electric Blue Acara
1 Redhead Geophagus Tapajos
1 Gold Gourami

On hold at my LFS:
1 baby Chocolate Cichlid

Considering adding (once the 225 is up):
3-5 clown loaches
1 Featherfin Squeaker (I’ve always loved the look of these guys)

Only concern is the gourami being possibly bite sized when the Oscar is full grown. Everything else should be good!

Chocolate and oscar won't like each if they are the same sex. Greater chance of it working out if they are of the opposite sex.

You forgot how slow clown loaches grow too. At least with the gourami, you can pull it out in time. With the loaches, the switchblade under their eyes would tear up the oscar, taking them both out.
