Getting back into the hobby after a 10yr hiatus. This will be for a heavily stocked Tanganyika community or large group of Tropheus. Set up would included a Hydor eth 300, and I’m looking hard at a eco tech mp10 for periodic bottom flow. My concerns are simply that the flow rate will be to much.
Obvious tricks will be implemented. Guess I just need some reassurance.

i have a modified 2260 with two bucket before - one acting as dummy to double my media but still same watts usage. this slightly reduce the flow. i also split the output with one spraybar at top and another at the bottom for redirect flow. both spraybar has an adjustment to contol flow in case it blows out too much substrate. the split spray bars will keep the flow moderate. you can save money by skipping the ecotech as the bottom spraybar help circulate the water - clean bottom.

Thanks gents,
I was/am debating splitting returns. I was actually thinking of running 3 jets in a series, ran vertically (top, mid, bottom) maybe with a few holes drilled between as well. Basically a vertical spray bar with jets lol.
Main goals here is one filter and not a whirlpool.

I like the idea of increasing the buckets for more media. Ive seen it but havent done it. That would not only lower the flow but increase your filter capacity. Win win in this situation.

Im not following you on why adding more filter capacity here is a “win win”.
The 2262 has a 18 liter media capacity. It’s literally the largest canister filter on the market. With a 950gph pump.

Just dial back the quick disconnect on the return side of the pump. Ive done with the 2262.

Actually splitting the return into 2 separate lines will reduce flow more than one line with multipile exit points. I have done this when using larger filters on smaller tanks. The extra canister space isn't any benefit to you. You can run the water into a swimming pool of media and it isn't going to hold any more good bacteria than the tank inhabitants can support, so skip that part. Later

What about a 12-14in long “spray bar” with one single opening running down the length of it?

I don't know how well a slot along the length of the spraybar will work unless it was tapered.

We built a 70" long spray bar for our 6 foot tank using 1/2" CPVC and drilled a series of holes along the length and the hole size was largest at the end of the run and smallest at the beginning of the run (closest to the output hose) in order to get an equal output at each hole. You will need to make up some kind of PVC adapter though to connect it to the Eheim 5/8" output hose.

I'd have to do a search to see if I posted on the forum though if you are interested in how we did it.
