Just came back from the LFS and was a bit of a shock seeing what they want for the 2262 and then media on top of that...
Anyways while I was there I placed an order for a 180gal tank and stand. The tank I intend to stock with Central American Cichlids 2-3 big ones and a few small, though all will start as juveniles. My intention is to use a 2262 and an AC110 in the beginning and in a year or so as the fish start getting some size I will add a second canister (fx5/6 or 2nd 2262).
The 110 I'd like to utilize primarily for mechanical and the canisters for BIO. With that in mind can someone offer some budget conscious suggestions for media options for the 2262? (oh and how many liters will I need?)
I open my canisters on my other tanks 3-4 times a year, and would like to do no more than that with the 2262.

Seachem Matrix and Eheim Substrat Pro have worked well for me. The Matrix is less expensive and generally considered as good as the Substrat Pro if not better.

Yeah I noticed Matrix is a lot cheaper, how much would I need? I think my lfs wants something like $100 for 5L of Substrat pro..

Skurj, I don't know how much you'd need for a 2262, but $100 for 5L of Substrat Pro is way too much $. Buy a 4L tub (and maybe an additional 2L size also) of Matrix from Big Al's or Ken's Fish (depending on where you live). Hell, I remember buying 5L of Substrat Pro from Amazon for about $65.

Heh its Big Al's selling substrat pro for 99.95 for 5L here in Canada
Yeah definitely going to be looking at the seachem product, the pail will come in handy too.

In my current 2262 I have 12L of seachem pond matrix, 5L eheim subtrat pro, purigen, and blue filter pad on top...

On another 2262 that I'm currently setting up will be 8L pond matrix, 5L eheim ehfimech, and whatever space left will be pillow stuffing.
