Youll be fine with 5 fish, but I would DEFINATELY get more LR before you put fish in it and 99% of us at MFK would reccommend a different way to cycle your tank instead of using fish.
Your biological filter should be 1/3 rd the total volume of the tank - that's approx. 24 lb's LR and 8 gal. - so 7 fish in 16 gal of water - not real good.
im getting a skimmer after cycle and a canister filter. fish will all be small fish only. i need some advice on canister fliter, which one should be gd?
If you buy enough LR you dont need a canister filter, but if you had to get one I would get a Fluval 206. I have had very good luck with my Fluval filters for FW. I would also reccommend a Marineland magnum 350. I have also had very good luck with them too. Like I said though. If you get enough LR you do not need a external canister filter. They can be more problematic than they are worth sometimes if they arent cleaned properly and frequently.
