I just picked up a 230 gallon reef tank i want to switch over to an aro stingray comm......
Its about 10 years old and was shut down 2 years ago and stored in a heated shop...... filthy as F%&*.....
I scrubbed the crap out of it and found out the front glass 5/8" starfire glass..... back and bottom are smoked and it has 1 1/2" Braces on front and back and a big euro brace at the top......
Its a sexy looking tank and i want it full yesterday :) But the silicone is bugging me.....
He said it was running when he shut it down and never had a leak but the verticle inner silicone looks really rough and discolored. SO i figured i would scrape it out and re do it.... But if im in there i may as well do the whole thing???? The back silicone looks fine but the front has alge in some spots so Im thinking to do the verticle inners and the front and sides at the bottom and leave the back alone as well as whats in the overflow as it all looks fine.
What do you guys think? should i just do the sections that look bad or take out the overflow and take it all right down and start fresh but Not taking it appart?
The inner seals between the sheets of glass are all ok its just the beads on the inside....

Heres the inner braces I was explaining..... If i try and strip them its going to get crazy...... Lots of seams on those full length braces.....

it does not look bad to me in this photo, but it is rather difficult to tell. I have had older thanks where the silicone looked like it would tear away at any moment but held up nicely.

Thats where im Hung right up...... Ive always followed the If it aint broke dont fix it method........
But this will be going in my basement with all my other non waterproof toys...... And a 300gallon right next to it so I need to feel safe about it :)

Well, even with a re-seal there is a possibility of it leaking, the question I guess would be would you want to invest all the time and effort for security with a possibility that you might have to reseal once again. I would test fill it and let it sit for a while and feel things out.

Anyone use MEK instead of acetone when detailing the glass before tapeing?
Sould i use steel wool or a plastic scrubbie?
should i use a forced air unit ontop of the tank for a quick cure? keep the temp of the shop hot?
