I found an ad online for a new 240 gallon glass tank, stand and canopy for $850. Would you buy one at that price? I'd prefer to get one that's acrylic instead but I still can't find one in my price range. I'm kind of reluctant to buy a glass one because my last tank was a used glass one and the seam split

I think thats an alright price..little on the high end though, I would just make sure it holds water and there aren't any visible cracks/leaks..I also would check out underneath the stand for any water damage

It's a brand new glass tank, think I forgot to mention that.

Hmm...well, I think thats about retail price...so if you want to pay retail then your good. Personally, I would offer him $750 just to see what he says...

that's about half of the price of the 240 I'm planning on from great lakes aquarium (according to their site). theirs does come with a 3 year guarantee.

Where I am that's what a 125+stand & canopy retails for. That would be a steal for an 8' 240 brand new here...

I just bought a 125g glass tank alone for $175, stand and canopy will cost less than $200 to make. But thats not "retail" I guess, but there is a 125g brand new with a nice canopy and stand for $575 at my LFS. So, a 240 would probably be about $1000-1500 (retail), your right...(too much IMO)

i wouldnt pay $850.00 for a 240g unless its a show quality acrylic setup & its turnkey...
i'd say around 600-700.00 is a good price for a used setup. btw cute pup! what kind
is it? looks like a akita pup :D and lol @ location... cafe lu lol. r u from irvine?

It's more than I would spend on that. But you have to remember, this guy likely bought it all at a LFS, and is losing money selling it for $850.

I've had to walk away from a few sellers because of that. One wanted $300 for a 75 gallon set up with a junk filter, no heater, and a junk light.....I mean, he paid $400+ for it all brand new, but I'm not paying that much. This was 6 months ago, and I still see it for sale on CL. They just keep posting it up week after week, and I explained to them that is not the going price for that set up. Some people just don't comprehend, so you have to move on and find another deal (which I did, and it was a FAR nicer set up under my budget).

You just have to talk with the seller, explain yourself, be nice and friendly, and see if you can work something out. I've met some really cool people on CL, and have got some really nice deals just because of being friendly. But sometimes, you just can't find a common ground on price. No hard feelings, that's just business. And something else will always come up for sale in another couple weeks, so if you don't come to an agreement, just walk away and wish them luck with the sale (sincerely, not sarcastically), and leave them your phone number incase they change their mind. I've actually had a few sellers contact me this way.

Just another note:
I've found that it's best if you actually meet face to face with a seller. People are a lot nicer and easier to deal with if they are talking to a person instead of a computer screen (email) or a phone. And bring cash with you. I'd say 90% of the time, when a seller is waffling about a deal, if I pull out cash and start counting it, they take the deal.

You have answered your own question, stick with acrylic. I have several TruVu tanks that are 25+ yrs old and never a single problem!
