I have a 240 AGA Freshwater medium current tank with dual overflows. The return lines are 3/4" PVC.

I am plumbing it to have it come up from the sump about 24", A tee to either side of the overflows, 1 - 90 degrees on each side to come up and another 90 degrees on each side to the return nozzles.

Total plumbing

Vertical 9 ft
Horizontal 6 ft
1 tee
4 - 90 degrees.

Any idea on what kind of pump I should be running ? I can run a little bit stronger pump and turn it down with ball valves, but I 'd like to get as close as I can to the needs.

I like the quiet one 5000 with 10.8" max head at 1330 gph (I'd imagine at zero feet ?)

or Mag 12.

Any other suggestions ?

I ran a mag 12 on my 240 for a while and the flow rate just wasnt cutting it, so I went with a Mag 18 and I could not be happier, O and i cant hear a thing from either of my pumps, the only way I know there working is either touching the sump or looking at the current. Awesome pumps in my opinion. But always go for more flow and you can always turn it down like you were saying with the ball valves. But its always better to have more than enough than not enough at all.

Why not use an external pump? A good quality external will still be running when most submersibles are in the landfill.

I would suggest a blueline model 70 not the most expensive and has a 10 year warranty .I will be running one of these on my 300 and a mag 18 inside the tank on a usj system.

Even better, if you can find a walmart that is getting rid of their aquariums right now, ask them if you can take a pump from the aquarium setup. They use Iwaki pumps, which are the best of the best IMO.
