just got a new tank 8'x2'x2' and it has about a 20-30 gallon diy sump under the tank. theres a hole drilled on the left side for the overflow, and pvc going to the sump. theres also a gravity fed hob protein skimmer that connects with the overflow pipe. i want to redo the whole filtration and piping. what is the best size pipe to get for the overflow and the the filter, also what size check valve. i also need to get a new pump, what kind of pump should i get and what will be the best to filter out my tank. i can always up grade to a bigger rubbermade.

pics please. also you will probly need a pump no smaller than 1500gph probly more like 2000gph to keep a good turn over rate.an unless you are doing a salt water tank then you dont need the protein skimmer.

More details. How big is that hole? That's your restriction point. Your pump can not exceed the capacity of that hole. Also it's possible to plumb that over flow with out a check valve and you will never drain your tank when power goes out. Check valves fail! I never use em.
1) overflow pipe size must be at least the size of the bulkhead fitting. So if you have a 2" hole in the side of that tank and there's a 1.5" bulkhead then run 1.5" line to your sump. Max out that flow!
2) Pump. My Fav pump is the submersible quiet one series. They are submersible so less plumbing and/or chances of leaky bulkheads.
3) Use the largest sump you can fit under the stand. No one ever said "darn my sump is to big".

could i run a pump that does 550 gph? for temp. use until i get a strong pump?
im also attaching a hob emperor 400

How big is the hole that is drilled in the tank for the existing overflow? Short of drilling a new hole, this will help determine pipe size and pump GPH

ok im really sure the size 1 1/2" is drilled in the side of the tank. the new pump outlet is about 1 inch, its lifegard aqautics 2200, i need to go to lowes and get some piping for it and im going to try it on my sump
