i will be getting a 240 gallon tank next feb. for my common snapping turtle. she will get to between 12 to 16 inches in shell length. maybe 18 but thats rare. i was going to build a pond in the basement for her but now my family is attatched. so weve decided to go with glass and keep her in the living room. the tank will only be 3/4 full at the most with watter. how think does the glass need to be? 72*30*25 are the tank dimensions.

thick enough not to shatter if it decides to catch a fish misses and snaps into the glass.

I wouldn't try to reduce the glass thickness just because the height of the water is low. You never know if you will one day want to fill her up all the way! And as ithurtz said you gotta think about how heavy that shell will be. I'd find out the thickness the aquariums usually come in and go up one size. my 175 is 10mill. (6 by 2 by 2)

My snapper weighed 55 lb and could stretch out 40+ inches from head to tail. He was 9 years old at the time and was still growing. His greatest trick was he learned to use his tail as a third foot so that he could stand up. He was a great turtle, but he ran away from home after Hurricane Charlie :(
