Finally my 240 long is going to be here at the end of this month. Now what I plan on buying is two 48" flourescent strip lights. My question is, do you think I should go with a double or triple tube strip? I dont want a super bright tank, but nothing bright enough either, any sugguestions would help me out, thanks.

Howdy,

1) will you keep plants?
2) will you go compact fluorescent or regular fluorescent?

No there wont be any plants and I figured I would just go with the regular.

I went with a single tube 6' light.

It lights up my 240 fine..its not extremely bright but it does give it an interesting atmosphere.

Go with the triple lamp fixtures. That would give you 240W of light. Is'nt it a rule of thumb that you need at least 1W of lighting per gallon?
If you think they're too bright just wait a year-they will be down to 75% efficiency and only giving out 180W.

Well I see one of you uses a 6' single and the another sugguests the triple. So I am thinking probably two 48" doubles. If it is too dim, then I can just get some higher intensity lights, if it is too bright, then I am just remove one bulb from the strip, as long as the other lights up with a bulb out. Also with the double strip I was thinking of replacing one of the white bulbs for a blue one, anyone have any experience with this or ideas? Also, what about moon lighting, never actually seen what this looks light? Are they just light enough so your nocturnal fish come out and your other fish still can relax or am I way off track?

I would go with single tube strip lights. It'll be bright enough without creating an algae factory. Adding moonlights would be cool be really not necessary. I've been thinking of adding moonlights on my aro tank myself, to keep him from jumping so much after lights out.

Good to know, at least single tube strips are cheaper. Hillbilly, what size tank do you have?

Do you know much about moonlights or lunar lighting same thing I am sure, I mean about the colors? Do the blues, reds, or whites help bright out different colors or any other advantages?

i have a 240 long with a fixture from home depot 8' long with two bulbs. the metal housing on it is just big enough to keep the bulbs off the top of the tank. cheap too i think the total set up cost me around $50

How many watt bulbs are they? I would have went with one of those fixtures, but I am not going to build a canopy to hide it.
