Quick question. would it be cheaper to build a 240G or just buy one. the tank i've been planning would be 72x24x31. i want to build one, but not if it's gunna be cheaper to buy one. what do you guys think?

Have you built one before?
Obviously building your own would be cheaper than having one built for you, but if you don't know what you're doing or you haven't got the manpower, time to do it it and the correct tools like a bench saw, it could be more expensive and more costly than just moneytery terms.
Personally I'd order, sit back and wait.

Plywood? All glass? Or acrylic??????

I would say it would probably be cheaper to buy one. Most won't advise to build anything smaller than 500G. Turns out cheaper to just buy it.

Start by pricing new tanks ,old tanks.Start calling glass supliers and getting quotes on the size of the glass you need.Or acrylic whatever floats you boat. After you have done that, ask yourself if you have the skills to build one.Its not that hard but it does take patience.
Good luck on your decision!

Sorry to say, but there are too many variables for any of us to be able to give you a good answer. You need to call around and search for supplies, make a list and start a budget for making the tank. Then shop around for the tank already made. Since 240s are rare, but they are made satandard, it's a tough one. Personally, if I was ready to build a tank, I would go for something bigger than a 240.

Don't build one that size, just get a used one. or spend 625 at glasscages.com for a new one. GL

if you build one, you require the skills, of course its gonna be cheaper than having one built for you. (you just need to buy parts and/or rent/buy tools, where the other one it'll cost you part and labors)

if you buy one, then hopefully you could find one locally, because shipping rate is just crazy.

imo do you want to build a bigger one later? that to me is the bigger question. if you do the experience gained in building a minny monster will be worth a ton and save you some screwups on the monster. I would be scared to death to tackle a 1000+ gallon tank as my first but a 240 is alot less unnerving to try.

625 + Shipping... i'm not sure what the shipping would be, but i'm guessing around 200+. So would it cost more than 900.00+ to build a 240G plywood tank?
