so i'm building a 240G plywood tank, and i'm in the planning stage of filtration. what i'm thinking is using a 50G rubbermaid tub that will overflow into a 20G wet/dry filter. the 50G tub will be full of bio media. and the reason for the 20G is i've got two just laying around. i'll be running a 1800 GPH pump. so what can i improve on?

Yep, it will overflow. The one inch of water above the intake is going to be 18-26 gallons, depending on the tank dimensions.

The solution is to flip the operation of the two tanks. Twenty gallons is good for mechanical filtration in the design of a wet sump. Then have the wet/dry in the 50g tub.

Set up the 20g tub like this:

so i've decided to scratch the 50/20 set up, and convert my 75G into my sump. so i'll post pics when i'm done:)
