I've used sumps starting with my FW 55 (HOB overflow) and a 9.3 Gal sump, then onto a FW 150 with a bulit in rear 20 gal sump, I've always had drip pads onto filter floss then bio balls. The tank I bought was saltwater and the 72 gallon is dividend in half by a wall with holes drilled at the top. The piping goes underwater then Ts off in the first chamber, in the SW setup the first chamber had a sand bed then cheato, then the water would overflow via the holes into the next chamber where they had bags of tiny white balls with live rock and a MAG 18b return pump.

I want to use my old bio balls, somehow do a mechanical filter (if I need one) and use alot of hornwort from my planted tank. Can I do a sand bed, have the overflow pipe in the bed then allow the water to come up through the sand into hornwort, overflow into the second chamber with bioballs floating (maybe a airstone to move them around) and have the return pump at the very end of that chamber? Open to ideas thanks!
