In case some of you havent heard, Ann Curry from NBC news asked herself after last Friday's massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School: "What can I do?" The answer she arrived at was performing 20 acts of kindness to honor the 20 students killed on that horrific day. On Sunday, she shared that suggestion on social media, inviting everyone to join her. The suggestion went viral.
By Wednesday, the hashtag "#26acts"(to include the teachers) was trending on Twitter and a "26 Acts of Kindness" Facebook page had exceeded 17,000 likes.
Curry stated "Imagine if we all committed 20 acts of kindness to honor the lost children of Newtown."
And there are variations on the theme: "20 acts" to focus on the children; "27 acts" to include gunman Adam Lanza's mother, Nancy, who police say he killed before the attack on the school. Curry writes to those who've joined up: "All good. You are in charge of this wave now."
Since NBC News' Ann Curry tweeted that idea earlier this week, it's taken off. Thousands have tweeted back to her about things they've done.
— Donating trees.
— Delivering meals.
— Anonymously leaving money for a co-worker who's struggling.
— Helping a stranger who's short on cash in the check-out line.
— Donating frequent flier miles to Make A Wish.
— Paying someone's tolls.
— Buying the person behind you in a drive-thru a coffee, etc.
You get the idea.
The point of this thread is we sometimes forget to think about the people around us. Sometimes it takes a catastrophe like 911 or Sandy Hook to remind us to look around and be mindful of others.
I'm not suggesting you all do 26 things, but what if we all did just 1 thing to help someone else - hold a door, shake a hand, say hello, give advice, pay a toll, etc. It's an easy way to make someone's day.
This said, I wish you all the best and a Happy New Year.
