hey everyone I am trying to get my wife into this fishkeepingthing a little to get her off my back and we found her a syno petricola today that she really likes. She was also eyeballing some julidochromis today as well. So i kind of got the idea to turn my 29 into a tanganyikan setup that she can choose the fish in. My first question is substrate. I kind of wanted to stay light in color to mimick their real habitat so I was eyeballing some salt water substrate called argamax sand from drs. foster and smith. Will this work for a tang setup or will there be water quality issues? after that I planned to stack some black slate I have to make caves and maybe ad a couple java ferns that I have growing. Will this setup work or am I heading for a disaster? thanks in advance

sounds like you're on your way to a great setup. sand is best and to my knowledge agramax should not cause any problems. the black slate sounds like it will look nice. keep in mind that syno cats can be a little agressive and since tangs grow slow you may keep an eye on the cat. good luck and post some pics when you get it set up.

great thanks. My syno is only about 1.25" long so I don't think he will be a problem. I will definatly get the pics up when it's done. thanks alot

Sounds like a good set-up. I usually just use cheap sand from a local nursery and rinse it well. Are you buying just one cat or several? I would say to add them last so the Tangs. can find a home first. The plants may do OK at first but if you are going to hard water the plants will die over time. I never had any long term success with live plants due to water hardness, but the do look good while they last. They are pretty cheap to replace, or if you have a supply from another tang your set.

I have 6 petricolas and I think they're fantastic. It doesn't take them long to figure out that food comes from above, and start eating from the surface of the water (upside down, of course!). All my friends think they look like sharks.

I'm in CO too, so when you buy some, watch the fins. A few of mine are deformed and missing some pelvic fins (although they are still very healthy - they just look a little funky.)
