29 gallon is about as serious as i've been bout a tank. i'm a reptile guy but excited none the less. its my first piece of furniture in my new apt.

I was thinking maybe 5 tiger barbs and a ghost knife to cycle the tank.
I was thinking of some clown fish too.
I got a Marineland Emperor 280 filter.
Should I get a powerhead?

sand vs small pebbles vs gravel?
lighting?

I'll take all your 2 cents! If you give me good advice i might name a fish after you.

clown fish are salt water. the fish that you mention to cycle with are freshwater. you need to decide what you want to do. then you decide what you want to cycle with and everything you need for the tank. if it's saltwater you need much more.

alright. you shouldn't need a powerhead, you do need a heater, you don't need an air pump. i don't know what a clown loach is so i can't help you on the substrate

Most people on here prefer fishless cycling. That amount of fish at once in a 29 would be too much to start anyway and BGK are fragile at small sizes.

Clown loaches wouldn't be a hardy starter fish either.
I got a Marineland Emperor 280 filter.
That should be sufficient.

Entirely up to you. Depends on type of fish you plan on final stocking it with and if decor will create dead spots.

sand vs small pebbles vs gravel?
Personal preference. I have sand in mine because I like the look. Different cleaning methods involved.
lighting?
Depends on budget, effect you want and is it going to be fish only or planted.

My .02 cents. Refunds cheerfully given.
