So after going thru a few stock changes, most recently being a pair of Convicts, I have an almost empty 29 gallon tank (Dad killed Mom after I removed their fry). I'm planning on either rehoming the male Convict, or moving him into my 75.
I'm looking for ideas for stocking the tank. Ideally the fish would be fairly readily available (prefer not to have them shipped to me) and relatively inexpensive (setting myself a target budget of about $100). Tank DOES NOT need to house the fish for life, but it would be nice to get a year or so out of the 29gal.
What should I stock this tank with?

Any specific type of fish you're looking for? If it's not a permanent home you could do something like an ery wolf, a shoal of exodons, a pair of 5 star generals, or a solo beani.

Was leaning toward a small shoal of exo's. Would 5 or 6 be ok in there for a good amount of time? Haven't kept them yet, they are on my want list though. Don't want to go solo fish. Looking for some action/movement in the tank.

Everything I've read states they need to be kept in larger groups or they'll pick each other off. I'd say maybe 8-10 in there, and probably looking at upgrading to a 40b later as they grow.

I do have a 46 (36x18 footprint) that will be free in about 3 months. I think what I'll do is get 12 Exo's in the next month or so, then move them from the 29 into the 46. Then I'll be back with the same problem of what to put in the 29. Lol. Unless someone has a more permanent suggestion for the 29, then I'll hold off on the Exo's until the 46 is open. What about a shoal of spotted silver dollars? They stay on the smaller side, I could probably do a shoal of 5 in the 29 for a good long time they could eventually go in my 75. I have 2 already that are about 3" currently living in the 75. Sorry, I feel like I'm rambling. Just kinda thinking as I type. Lol
