Hey, I have a baby oscar in a 29 gallong tank. I've heard mixed things on housing them in one. I had heard some people say that I could keep him in there permenately provided that I have absolutely no other fish in there with him. What do you guys think?

and if I need bigger, about how long will it be until i should upgrade to say a 55 gallon tank?

thank you very much

29G is wow small to say the least. 55gallon? i would say more 75-> 100G personally and over filtered and you may aswell get it stright away.

i have a 100G tank and i think a full grown oscar should only just fit actually. hmmmm

oscars *i think* are the most mis-treated cichlid...they are really cheap!

£3 oscar = £400 tank

If you keep the oscar in a 29G for life it will stunt its growth and die prematurely. * 29 US gallon is 25 UK gallon * i have a 25uk gallon marine tank and 3 small fish. i couldn't think what a full grown oscar would look like.....

keep it in the 29G for a couple month until you can upgrade or just sell the oscar and get something that can live forever in the 29G

yeah 29 is too small for an oscar. They grow up to 14 inches which is longer than your tank is wide. Princess is absolutely right about stunting as well.

He'll outgrow a 29g in less than a year. If space is a real concern. Get a 50g breeder rather than a 55g. A 55 gallon tank is 48 1/4" x 12 3/4" x 21" INCHES. That means it's essentially 12 inches wide. A 50g breeder on the other hand is 36 7/8" x 19" x 19 5/8" not quite as long as the 55g but at least he'll be able to turn around. You would need to over filter and really stay on top of water changes. A 75g is ideal for 1-2 oscars, of course the bigger the better is true of any fish tank.

There are some cool fish you can keep in a 29. If you like oscars, oscars are cichlids and there are lots of other cichlids you can keep in a 29.

Here's a link to another forum where they have stocking ideas for tanks:

Remember with cichlids it's all about the area the bottom of the tank takes up because they are territorial.

Good luck!
