During my water change I left the tank draining and came back to find my arowana squirming around on his side on the bottom unable to stay afloat. Unsure if he jumped and hit himself hard or if it was the work of one of my stingray but after 8 hours of head down, tail up he's finally passed. When I took him out I couldnt find any puncture marks but his back end had turned purple. (He has always had the section missing on his fin since he was 6" so not as a result of what happened today). Is this "bruising" likely to be because of a ray or maybe because of something internal caused from jumping ?

Any thoughts to what might have caused this are appreciated image.png image.jpeg

Sorry for the loss.

Sorry for the loss. If there no wounds I'd say he likely hit his head. Sucks to lose such a nice fish

Ye i think he may have knocked himself and the pink/purple marking was from the rays sucking on his tail when it was resting on the bottom before he died

I too would guess it hit its head especially if it jumped before or was even prone to jumping... but that should leave a mark(s) on the head. The blow should have been pretty strong.

Hes jumped before but it was at night when he got spooked by the ray crusing the side and he had the tank lid hanging off from the impact. This time there was no signs he had hit the lid and no markings on him other then a little pink around his fin.

I see. I had to pull out my aros from 4500 gal and temporarily place them in 240 gal to recover on a couple of occasions when they hit their head and became discombobulated. Otherwise, they'd get eaten by RTCs and Co.

This could be a poorly healed fracture that broke again, jumping related deaths definitely seem to be the most common c.o.d for silvers.
