Hi, I just recently decided to get rid of my pair of cons and do a planted tank with maybe a pair of rams. I recently bought some new plants for my 10g, and with some great advice found here, the plants are quickly outgrowing the tank. I want to move some of them into the 29g, and possibly get some more. I have two very tough swords in the 29g now with the convicts and they are surviving, but thats all. The cons frequently uproot these plants.

I plan on upgrading the lighting, and using flourite (which I just bought on my lunch break :D). I currently have sand as substrate. Can I just mix the two? If I use the flourite, do I need to use root tabs as well? (I read that the tabs will be beneficial to the swords.) Any recommendations or suggestions for lighting in my tank? Any help is much appreciated.

Ok, so I went to the lfs last night, and found out that my lighting system just isn't going to cut it. It holds a 24" bulb, and I couldn't find anything stronger than 18 watts for that size. So I decided to upgrade. The guy working recommended some kind of coral life lighting system. It houses two T5 bulbs, that are 18 watts a piece. Will this be sufficient lighting for a 29g tank, with mainly swords and moneywort? (I think that's what it is). Also, I read the thread you posted wyldflya (good stuff), and I still am wondering if I should buy the root tabs even though I've added the flourite substrate.

The twin 18w would be a standard T5 fixture, and still a waste. What kind of plants are you looking to grow? Coralife makes a plant light CF hood that would be very good for your tank.

Could I not buy HO t5 bulbs for this fixture?

NO T5 bulbs are a different end pin style, and the ballast would have to be replaced. No chance of that.

So this fixture will be a waste? Even for just low light plants?

What coralife hood are you suggesting? Price?

why not get power compact bulbs?

PC and CF are one and the same. Power compacts are great lights, where a 24" fixture can have a 65 watt bulb. This is what I would recommend, 1 30" fixture. Make sure to get the planted light, 6700K bulb.

does spectrum matter?
like "power glo" "daylight" and stuff like that?
