Keyhole cichlid or single firemouth

salvini maybe, but that'd be pushing it a bit., or a blood parrot.

yeah go blood parrot, a guy told me he had one that was so fond of him it would let him cup his hand under it and he could pick it up and just move it around.

Sorry, but there is no way that a full grown blood parrot could live in a 29. I would say a 40 at a bare minimum and even that is pushing it. They get a lot bigger then you may think.

A female JD could be done in a 29. They usually get around 7 inches.

:OMG: :screwy:
C'mon man... Thats crazy talk... single JD's shouldn't be in anything less than 55 long term, minimum. I grew my female JD to 4" in my 29 and it was cramped...way too small. Now she's in a 90 with a GT and FM. I woudln't put a FM in that tank either

Go small and remember these fish will most likely live there for their entire life based on the info you've provided. I have a 29 set up with 2 German Blue Rams. They like a lot of plants so that might be the firt step. I looked into other Apistogramma as well (some consider the ram to be in that category). There are several very colorful species that would work well in a tank that size.

There are some small African cichlids that might work as well, but I'm not familiar enough with them to provide any names off the top of my head.

Find a few species you're interested in and look them up for proper care and minimum tank size. Tons of info on the web with a quick search of a species name.

Good luck

I agree it's too small for a JD but I have had a single firemouth in a 29 gallon with no problem. He grew to 6 inches in a little over a year and was perfectly healthy. Still going strong in my buddies 135. Look at it this way, people recommend a 75 gallon for an oscar, which grows to about 4 times the size of a firemouth and is a much messier fish, and everyone says it's ok. Thats a 14 inch fish in a 48 inch tank. Why not a 6 inch fish in a 32 inch tank? And yes I know a firemouth can break 6 inches but it's rare and takes time. I personally never had one grow over 7 inches. And that guy was over 6 years old.

I disagree. A 55 is way more than enough for a single JD. While more is always better, 30 gallons will suffice for a single female JD. They rarely get larger than 7 inches. That is not much more than a 6 inch Firemouth. I did it for years with a healthy happy fish. Now a male that gets 8-10 inches is a different story.

On a separate note. Being disrespectful to opinions helps no one. I am speaking from a successful experience. There is no need for the :screwy:. I am not an unexperienced fishkeeper. I have successfully kept large cichlids for nearly 25 years. IME 30 gallons is fine as a minimum for a female JD.

I think you COULD keep a female JD in a 29 but I wouldn't. That's a pretty heavy bodied fish. I have seen a huge male, 10 inches plus, in a 29 gallon before though so it's possible. He was raised there his whole life with good filtration and water changes. It's all a matter of opinion really, doin your own thing, as long as it works out, is what this hobby is about honestly. And as far as the disrespectful comments go, don't take them to heart. Look at it this way, what type of person gets his/her jollys by harassing someone online? lol. I just ignore em. :)
