i wanted to increase the water volume of my 60 gallon non drilled reef tank thats been set up for about a year and a half. originally i was planning on buying a hob overflow and plumbing a refuguim under my tank in my stand. with no luck fitting a decent sized tank inside my stand i decided to go bigger and plumb my existing tank into a decent sized tank situated inside the coat closet behind it. And i also decided its a waste to spend a ton of money on and overflow i can build.

i will go over the process and any comments, suggestions and questions are appreciated.

the first video is a test i ran on my pvc overflow using two 5 gallon buckets and a flotec sump pump i think is rated for 2500 gph. i want to remove the blue glue smudges, is that possible?

Great build.

Paint the pipes using Krylon Fusion Paint. Scuff the pipes with a High grit paper, then use 3-4 light coats of paint.

If that pump is going to be in your final build, I'd up the diameter on that return line. That hose is restricting the pump and is putting un-needed stress on the pump.

thanks bro,

no thats a pump i use for w/c 's im trying to figure out what type of pump i should use, im thinking the rio 3100? but i want more gph

can i paint the part that will be inside the tank as well, or will the salt erode it?

I haven't heard of salt eating the Krylon off of PVC. But I know that people are painting the ones in F/W without issues. Now if you wanted to just scuff it up really good with sand paper and hang it I am sure the Coraline would coat it in no time. For that matter you could Epoxy little ledges to the pipe and tack Corals to it.

I modified a couple of these for my O/F using a coping saw. Just dropping this in reduces the flow WAY too much.

did you just use the white pvc part of the drain? and was the steel strainer hard to remove ?

sorry the shrimp loves to take the spotlight

I used krylon and i would say rough off the pvc frist, as mine started chipping after a while, but maybe i didn't let it cure long enough.

The strainer is 100% PVC. I cut the bottom down to 1/4" and the opened up the outer most holes by cutting from inside the hole straight to the edge. It increased the flow a ton. Pics later.
