Hey everybody,

I just set my first aquarium up this week, and need to add a second filter. The one that I'm currently running is an emperor 280. I don't have the media basket for it though, and therefore can't add carbon etc.

For my 2nd filter should I get.

A. another Emperor 280
B. an Aqua Clear 50
C. Something else (please specify :))

I am excited and hoping to do this right the first time so any help is appreciated. I am going to either grow out a pair of oscars or do an african cichlid tank.

just realized this is probably a setup/filtration question. Sorry Mods.

go with an Aqua Clear 70. Its a powerhouse and will double as a powerhead for your tank. Tons of room for bio and if you look hard enough you can find them for real cheap. I run two of these on a 55 and it works great!

on second thought sell the 280 and replace it with two ac 70s or an ac 110. They should last for many years problem free. Thats what I would do.

x2 for the two 70 Aquaclears.. thats what ive been running for 2 years without any problems. They're not too expensive, same with the filters

that emperor is doing good mech filtration on your tank. I would suggest a small canister filter a rather inexpensive rena xp2 or a fluval 205 or a smaller eheim would do wonders for your tank and bio filtration.

What is a powerhead? Thanks for the suggestions btw :)

just ordered the AC 70 for $40 bucks (free shipping) from ebay.

Thanks!! :headbang2

I've got a 45 gallon tank with two Pbass that poop bigger than most rodents (they are going in a 150 in two weeks)

the tank is filtered by a Fluval 204 or 304 (I really don't know cause it's so old the sticker fell off), a penguin powerhead with sponge, and a Hydro Sponge that is rated for an 80gallon tank. I missed my regular "25% water change once a week" and did one after two weeks. Before doing the change I did a water test, Ammonia and Nitrites were at zero.

in the AC just ditch the chem (carbon) and just use the sponge that comes with and then on top of that pack it with scrubbies
