Would you say this is excessive of would this be considered normal amongst monster fish people and what is a good way to cut down the turbulence this will create.:nilly:

Well you can adjust the flow on the FX5's. But yeah I would say its excessive but depending on your fish should work just fine. You can also position the outlet into a more discreet area if the fish don't like the current.
Personally I would only use one. But if I had 2 why not right?

Just 1 will work fine, no need for 2

Having a large amount of solid decor, such as rocks or wood, will drastically reduce the amountof current in the tank when compared to a bare tank....

Two FX5s has an actual flow rate of 1200 gph or less. Which is 10 times turnover, which many people use on their tank. This is by no means "to turbulent" for Cichlids. I've used higher turnver rates than this on Dwarf Cichlid tanks...

That said, if I was going to spend $500 on filtration for a 120 gal tank it surely wouldn't be on two FX5s... I think you have many more practical options...

Thanks for your feed back, the one i have now is cycled and doing an awesome job.
I am setting up a 240 gal with a sump and 2 fx5s so i thought i would get the second one now and seed it for a few months from the grow out tank to speed up the change over.

a few months, is way longer than needed...if you run it that long, it will have, in theory, become 50% of your filtration...
When you remove it, to put on another tank you will be removing 1/2 of the existing filtration,
If you plan on leaving the grow out tank set up...

a different approach, would be:
In the new tank,
De-chlorinate and add your stock...
Exchange a foam from the new units, with foam out of the current FX5.
Split it among both of the new FX5's and use "Stability" from SeaChem...

That would be the speediest...;)

He is not leaving the 120 running and buying 2 extra fx5's. Thats the reason he wants to get it now so he can get it seeded so he can move it to the 240

yeah i am gona try a small reef set up in the 120 once everyone is moved into the 240 but thats another story . even if i moved them 1 at a time i think the filter left behind on the 120 would pick up the slack left by removing the other fx5 pretty quickly ?
