Alright, I have had these 55's out in my backyard for a while and finally decided to use them for something. I have them connected with a medium-sized sump.
The top 55 drains into my sump via an overflow box, then the sump drains into the bottom 55 where a Mag 7 pump returns water to the top 55. The tanks both had broken crossbraces, so as you can see in the pictures I made my own...Suprisingly, they are very sturdy and don't allow any flex.
I have 6 small convicts in the bottom tank and plan on letting them do their thing. Once I see at least one pair starting, I plan on rehoming the others...eventually. The plan is to leave any fry down there to grow up, maybe use some to feed whatever is in the top 55?
I currently have another 55 african cichlid tank and a 75 gallon planted tank. So, I was planning on having some aggressive/larger fish in the top 55...but space will be limited.
The pictures don't show it, but I now have the sump stuffed with more bioballs and filterfloss.
Ok enough talk...here are some pictures of the set up process--
