Hello Fellow Fish lovers

A friend of mine , had some glass work done to his store front.
an overstimation of materials needed, left him with 6 sheets of the above mentioned specs.

Can i use these for any thing......say a tank 8x4x1.5
plywood and glass
Will that thickness be strong enough
thx mark

Interesting. A bottom piece maybe. And make it like 20 inches tall with other glass for the sides. Dunno.

But you could not use them for the sides since you cant cut it and 3\8" is not thick enough for 4 foot

yes. but for 4 feet high you would need... 1" Glass minimum. Thats a 2.5 saftey. For the recommended 3.8 around here it would be thicker. Your tank would weigh near a ton empty. lol

Remember that although tempered glass is far stronger than regular glass when it does break is does so in a catastrophic failure. Your entire tank will likely end up on the floor IF it does break. So you are stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Tempered glass "CAN" be cut.. it just involves a lot of heat. You have to anneal the glass first, which heats the entire sheet up to around 900 degrees, and then slowly cools it over about 8 hours. Plus annealed glass looks better. Now you just need to find someone with a 4x8 craft oven or kiln. Easy!

Probably more expensive than buying new glass though.

You could build a 4 x 8 tank, hide the top foot and only put 30" of water in it.. Or build it 4 x 8, fill it halfway, and put plants in the top..

Or you could brace the glass to stiffen it up
