Snapped this shot of my 3" EBJD today. This is one of the nicest I've ever seen for sale, picked him up a few months ago.... I couldn't pass the opportunity up when I saw him.

And his tank, you can see the other EBJD up and to the right of him.

Before I go into stock, let me say I love having planted tanks. Looks beautiful and allows for a higher bioload. That being said, stocking is a little odd, I'm surprised myself that this mix is working, but here goes.

2x EBJD
1x Standard Jack Dempsey (baught assuming it was a female, turned out to be another male)
3x Blue Diamond Discus, getting along surprisingly well with dempseys. The only aggresion I see towards these guys is from eachother!
1x Senegal Bichir- Also looking to get rid of... I love the fish, but I hate not being able to have smaller fish.
1x Rainbow Shark
4x White skirt tetra

And thats it.

My plan is to eventually ditch everything but the blue dempseys and rainbow shark, and get a large school of rummynose tetras or cardinals. I had the dempseys in with rummynose before and they were fine, and I've also seen this combination work... I'm a little weary about when the jacks get bigger, but theyve never gone after any smaller fish I've had them with so we'll see. Ill start out with a small group as a test to see if it works. I keep them really well fed, the tank gets 2 cubes of bloodworms and 1 cube of beefheart every day/every other day ( the bichir will eat most of this himself) and NLS cichlid formula in between, keeping them fat and happy seems to keep aggression issues at bay, with the exception of the discus beating the s*** out of eachother.

A couple updated shots, hes grown about an inch or so since the last photos, quite a bit in overall weight/girth. Mind the iphone photos.

hes growing out in a 40 breeder with 3 other EBJDs and some emperor tetras. Weekly water changes, and daily feedings of bloodworms/algae sheets/pellets and other high protein frozen food are getting him to a nice size, fast.

Awesome, what size is the next tank once they all get bigger?

Leaving that to my dad to figure out; he's inheriting this tank when I ship off to basic training. Likely a 75 i've got in my shed; these guys should be fine. IME they dont get nearly as large as regular jacks, occasionaly yes, but the recessive gene seems to have a positive effect on their temperament as well. Smaller confines than reccomended don't really scare me in regards to them fighting over territory, and I always over filter. In regards to the recessive gene, though, I find it interesting that one gene would have so many effects on a fish. Color, temperament, size(possibly), elongated finnage. These fish seem to be like a genetic holy grail.
