I have a 3 inch Rhombeus right now in a 30gallon tank and was waiting to until I moved back to school to upgrade and get a 75g or bigger for him. Heres my problem, I re-read over my new lease today and I already knew pets were forbidden but figured fish were still ok, as it was at my last lease. But started reading over some of the other details including a huge section about indoor plants and water damage, and no water-beds, so I went ahead and called him. He wasn't sure at first if he wanted to allow it but he asked how big, I said a 30g and he said he would allow that.

My question is whats the smallest tank that the Rhombeus could live in for a year, would the 30g be ok? how bout a 40g long? Or should I just give him away to a better home and wait another year?

well if he says a 30 is good. then thats whats good. if you do a 40 gallon you already violated your lease...so a 75 gallon would be the same issue.

Ya but I'm wondering would he be ok in that 30g for a year? I know they grow slowly, but I feel like given a years time it could easily outgrow it. Also I feel like I can push it a little buy getting a 40g long. I would rather get caught with only ten gallons more than he knows about than, more than double.

the landlord may not know the size of the tanks anyway.. non fish keeping individuals may not know the difference between a 40 and a 30.. but a 75 is kinda large to pass off as a 30..

thats what Im banking on, but would the fish be able to live in a 40g for the next year without outgrowing it?

they are really really slow growers

use some type of dewormer and you should get a little bit more out of them in a year..
