ok i have 3-4 watts per gallon for my tank and i was wondering if i still need a co2 system...i know it would help a lot but i cant afford one right now and i dont feel like making one..so would 3-4 watts per gallon work for a good planted tank ?

with that much light, you are going to have an algae farm unless you can really get co2 and nutrients balanced.

Make one, they're really easy and cheap. I made one in like 10 minutes last week for my 40g. The best part was drinking the Dr. Pepper =). I plan to make one when i get back from my vacation this weekend. Just google DIY CO2 generator and your good to go. Just make sure you use a bottle that is used to lots of pressure, so basically a soda bottle (not a water bottle) and be sure to use a checkvalve. Other than that, it's simple as can be. I'm also gonna try and make a diy co2 diffuser like a bell to try and keep the co2 in the water longer. gl.

co2 rigs are overrated imo, just make sure the plants you get like a lot of light. And get some nerites!

my first thought was that there is not enough info here to give meaningful advice . . . we don't know:

> the size of the tank (it matters)?
> kind of lighting being used (T8, T5, CF)?
> kelvin ratings (6700K, 10,000K, 18,000K, actinic)?
> what kind of plants being kept?
> how long are the lights on?

WPG is an easy to use rule-of-thumb guideline, but it's not a good starting point to ask questions about needing CO2 or not . . . more info, please :)
