Greetings MFK, first time posting on this forum.
I've got several fairly large aquarium options I've been looking at because I want to have a polypterus tank, and was wondering if this one would be a good option for a group of upper jaws. Dimensions are 36" L x 36" W x 30" D so around 160 gallons. I'm particularly interested in having a 'poly pile' as having seen pictures and videos of these, I find them adorable. I already keep smaller spiny eels (macrognathus) and I find their tendency to pile up with each other amongst the plant stems to be wonderful to sit and enjoy.
The species I have been considering are all smaller upper jaws - mokelmbembe, Palmas, Buetikoferi, retropinnis, polli, and especially delhezi as I think they have neat patterns. Haven't really considered senegalus as their lack of any real pattern seems quite bland to me. Do they have any real personality traits that make up for this lack of pattern over other bichirs, or am I better sticking with the above mentioned species?
I don't know how many of which species would be appropriate stocking for a tank this size. Thats why I come to y'all for help. I don't need all of those species, they're just the ones I'm considering. But I figure this tank has the same area as a 125, its just a bit deeper and has a very nicely locking lid, which ought to prevent any escapees.
