all you've really done is change the shape of the tank, not the volume that needs to be filtered . . . so, assuming you're properly filtered now, you should be able to use the same filtration on your new tank

exception: this would not be true for a UGF set-up

What's UGF setup?

under-gravel filter . . . they use plates that are fit to the dimensions of the tank . . . I just added that as an after-thought,

I plan on making it a Reef tank
Be sure to read up on what you need for a reef tank (i.e. protein skimmer, live rock, optional refugium, etc) as filtration is handled differently than other types of tanks.

I'm not an expert by any means but I believe the live rock takes care of the biological filtration, a protein skimmer removes biological 'sludge', and a mechanical element takes care of particles suspended in the water column.

What are you getting at? I'll get a good filter for the 40, the shape of the tank doesn't matter..
