Ha.. maybe a senegal bichir(would be pushing it), dwarf puffers are always fun to watch, and also convicts are always interesting to watch breed.
If your looking for more of a community, and you want a monster, try an African Butterfly Fish, I just got one, and it very beautiful. You can put some mid/bottom dwellers that are too big to fit in its mouth with it.

A Convict would have lots of personality. Get a female though as the males get bigger. Maybe a Firemouth? I wouldn't put an EBJD in a 30 g tank.
