When i 1st got into this great hobby i can remember 2 of the coolest fish being the Jack Dempsey, and the Convict cichlid.Back then every LFS that you went to had a ton of these 2 fish, but now usually there is only 1 tank reserved for the dempsey's and 1 for the convict, and they are usually the cheapest cichlids in the store. Why has the popularity of these 2 fish declined so much??I would love to see anyones pics of these 2 great fish, especially of adult male Convicts!!Thanks!!!

just lost this guy (3yrs) at the start of oct.
pic from late last winter.

a short time after that pic, i stopped using carbon in my tanks. the pitting on the face cleared up for good afterwards. i'm a believer.

I have two central american tanks, discus tank and a malawi tank and I don't use carbon in any of them.......carbon is only needed when you treat fish with meds. you add carbon after fish are helathy and meds need to be removed. then remove carbon again.

i would say the reason why they arent so popular anymore..is because there are more cichlid species in the hobby then there were 30 years ago..

heres a few photos of my male dempsey and male convict

dont know why the last 2 dont show up..

I dont really think they have declined in popularity, but now there are more species you can easily obtain, and the reason they are so cheap is because they are easily bred, and are one of the fish more beginner breeders will try.

Jd's are still cool, but convicts are like Guppies now. It;s not that they aren't great fish, just too easy to breed.
