what kind of filtration would be best for a 300 housing a jardini arowana and a few tankmates, all cats as of my current decisions? would any lighting be ok? not sure if this is what is considered a dunb question, but what exactly does a sump do?

Many hobbyists consider sumps the way to go once you start getting into the big tank territory. If you are an absolute newbie to sumps, don't know a diddle about them, and are scared to death and very apprehensive about the whole sump thing, my simple answer to that would be......don't be.

They are brilliant and once hobbyists get past that initial fear and get to know about them they never look back, and won't entertain any other form of filtration again, myself included. They can be as complicated and technical as you want, all totally unnecessary imo, or the most simplistic bit of kit you can imagine.

I have a very basic three chamber sump, water enters into the mechanical chamber, then goes through my bio chamber, and the last chamber houses my pump. My heaters go down there out of sight too.

There are some guys on this very forum who run sumps that wouldn't look out of place in a high tech science facility, they look fantastic, but don't be put off by how technical they look. That is their choice, you certainly don't have to run them like that.

There's loads of info out there, do some research.....and don't be scared of them. Once you have one up and running you'll soon realise how efficient and easy to maintain they are.
