I am setting up our first monster tank. It's going to be a 300 gallon saltwater acrylic tank that's going home a bamboo shark as well as some tang and Some other fish. would a fluval fx5 be sufficient or what would I need to add more to it.

I suggest a sump it would be suffucient enough for filtration. I not too familiar with cannister filters. Just that with all i've read is their just nitrate factory. A sump would give you more room for filtration and media.

sump with seachem matrix and/or live rock rubble. Buy the biggest protein skimmer you can afford with those large fish. Look for a sump at least 60-75 gallons. The fx5 is pretty worthless on sw tanks.

You might try posting this on some more salt water related forums for some more informed answers. This place is aimed more to the freshwater keeper

I agree with the sump idea with lots of live rock/rubble and a big protein skimmer
