hey all, recently i bought a 300 gallon stock tank. I am new to the hobby and this seemed like a great starting point. But i dont understand the heating part, Which heater do i need in watts and how much will the bill be?

I would take a temperature reading and find out price of kilowatt in your area and we can calculate your heating cost.

Your going to need at least 2 300 watt heaters depending on how cold it is where your going to set it up. Your going to have to cover it because you're going to lose a ton of heat with it wide open plus it's gonna stink up your whole house

Where is the tank going to be located. If it is upstairs in a heated room then the cost to heat the tank is considerably less than heating them in a basement where my tanks are located.

Agree with the other posts, just remember to place your submersible heater horizontal and place it IN THE CURRENT, preferably the outflow but I suppose the intake will work too, just less current at the intake. What this does is prevent the thermostats on your heaters from taking a "false-reading", which is what happens when the heater sits in still water. Without current to circulate the rest of the water, the heater may simply be just reading the area of water surrounding the heater itself in a 2-4 inch radius, so it might read 78F, while in reality the rest of the tank is only 74F or 76F.

I found placing a Bubble wall directly beneath them works just as effectively also.....as long as the water is always moving.

For a 300 gallon tank I would use 4 300w heater spaced out
