I am picking up this tank next week and it comes with a 65 gallon sump. Will the tank be fine with just the 65 gallon sump as the filter or would you have another filter in the system? I have never used a sump so im not sure if one sump will do the job or I need to have a secondary filter.

I have used a 55 gallon sump on 500 gallons of tanks, without a problem.
Compare the average HOB, (about a quart) in size, or canister (a gallon or 2) and the amount of media that fits these type filters on an average sized 100 ish gallon tank, and how much media you can fit in a 65 tank as a sump.
And its not also really about size, its about turnover through the amount of media used (pumpage) that counts.

That makes sense. It comes with the pump also but I dont know how many gallons per hour its rated at. I will have to see when I get it and make sure the plumbing is large enough for the amount of gallons per hour I need. Thanks for the info.

I have that exact set up. I have never had a problem but I have a very strong pump. A echo tech marine. I added an overflow box to increase the flow with 2 -1 inch pipes. My sump is a wet dry trickle type sump I built myself.

Sounds like it was probably working that way before it got sold. Or am I mistaken? We tend to over think this filtration thing alot. As long as ammonia is being turned into nitrite and nitrite is turned into nitrate in short order like no readable amount of either of the first two your filtration is working. Then it's up to you to get rid of nitrates. Water changes, plants, nitrate reactors whatever you decide. I like plants and waterchanges. Tinkerers like nitrate reactors and building elaborate filtration contraptions to each his own. Still gotta do waterchanges though.

I like to use plants for the nitrates.

So on to the important questions.... what's going in it?
I dont know if you have read any of my threads but I have a couple on a P. Managuensis male I have been growing out. Hes about 7.5" at this point and in my 85 gallon tank. I am putting him in the tank and maybe a female if I can find one he will pair up with.

With the first question answered lets move the topic to tank mates. If I keep just the male jag in the tank can I put any schooling fish in with him? I would only be interested in fish from the correct areas. I have a feeling hes gonna eat whatever I put in the tank. What do you think?
