I have a 300 gallon tank that I want to convert to a piranha tank. I was thinking of doing a shoal of red bellies. How many red bellies can I put in there? I was thinking of buying around 24 to 30 1" fish and growing them out. Is this too many?

general rule of thumb is 20 gallons per piranha. so at that number your looking at
15. you are getting them small, but they develop fast and are quite cannibalistic at that size. i would go 20 in case you have any deaths. room for 15 or so when full size.

Much easier to take some out and sell to LFS for store credit than it is to add new ones to an existing shoal. You will probably lose a few along the way when the are small. I think 24 would be fine for the 300 gallons.

with 300g, you can go with 30 to start with. may want to grow them out before you put them in 300g, feeding and cleaning in that big tank will be a pain when the fish are too small.
or if you can wait it out, get some cariba in a couple months or so.

Thanks guys. How hard will it be to get these little guys to eat? I can see them getting lost in a tank of this size. What is the preferred food for this size.

i have 22 RBP is my 180g it is way overstocked. plus it has two 1-2" plecos.(which i hardly ever see) 17 other fish 1-2" (tetras, guppies, mollies, platys) i plan on selling half when they get to adult size assuming they all make it that far. its a huge bioload on my 2 filters though.

I don't think 22 2" rbp in 180g is too overstocked if done right.

I myself is pondering the pygo route again, but like everyone said, start with a decent number 20-24, then from there, 15-20 is a great size shoal when mature.

They'll eat anything really, but not a bad idea to grow them out in a 55-75 until the are 2-3 inches. Bloodworms, mysis, talapia, shrimp.

Definitely go with at least 24. Make sure you provide lots of cover, and throw some tetras or something in there to help break up some of the aggresion.
