Hey guys I'm planning on getting a 300g Rubbermaid to be a breeding vat for cichlids during the summer here in VA. My biggest question is what would I use to filter this thing? I want something that won't suck up fry, that would defeat the purpose of the pond. Ide also prefer something with a built in UV filter for algae control. I plan on using pea gravel as a substrate (or do I need substrate?) and plan on throwing some driftwood and Texas holey rock in for cover. Any tips would be most helpful as this is my first attempt to do anything of this sort

I would build a barrel filter with a bunch of media ie bio balls, cabon, filter pads, barley, whatever else you can think of. This of a canister filter but bigger!

What kinda of cichlids? I would catch the fry to keep them safe. I use 10" Square Planter Basket from lowes and you could just clip them to the sides. You can also put plants in the basket to keep them safe in case the fish eat them and it will naturally filter the pond.

substrate - either way.... there are pros and cons to both. I dont have any in my pond.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like what I'm trying to do isn't feaseable seems like no.matter what filter it has a chance to suck up the fry :/ any other suggestions?

Put a sponge prefilter on intake, for example take off filter strainer so its just a tube, buy ac110 sponge cut in half, poke hole and ram it on the intake tube, it will prefilter anything and it wont suck up fry, although u will have rinse it 1x per week

OK now that sounds like what I would do on a glass tank, sound like it would work OK in a pond too. Would I have any issues with temperature? I don't plan on digging any holes for it to sit down in as I'm just planning on using it during summer months does anyone have experience with temperature and NOT putting it in the ground?
