i was thinking of using a 80 or 90 gallon trash can sectioned off by egg crate with sponges and live rock and other things for bacteria to grow on.
I will use either a 1000 GPH or a 650 gph pump to pump water out of the 300 gallon and have a hose that i want to run down from the top of the trash can to the bottom. For getting water back in i was thinking of just attaching a Pvc pipe to the top of the trash can and letting gravity do the work...

Also where the water spills into the pond i wanted to put rubbermaid with sponges in it and a bunch of holes in the bottom to filter the water even more. and just let the water drip into the pond from this.

the tank will have a lid.

So, suggestions ? tricks? do you think my idea will work?

I would use a bulk head at the bottom and one at the top for the return. Gravity return should be slightly bigger (IE 1.5" at the bottom and 2" at the top) if the pump allows for that size pipe. The 1000 gph is the way to go. Another bulkhead at the bottom will allow you to flush the filter out. The little rubbermaid in the return is probally not necessary. With enough media at the top of the filter, it should polish the water just fine.

Do you know what you are going to be stocking in there? Plants? Conditions of the area its in? Hard to help with the information given.

hmm im in Florida.. im stocking with a florida gar and a TSN-> im not sure it may be a spotted shovelnose to young to tell... and a florida snapping turtle... plants i could use suggestions im thinking S.American plants...

right now its too cold and i dont have a 1500 watts of heating... i bought a pump that does 1500 gph at a two foot lift with a 1'' hose attachment...

but i may add one or two p.bass not sure atm.... i wanted a aro.. but i dunno if i have room i dont think i do. Do i?

the pump has a 1'' attachment but i bought a more powerful model it says 20 gp minute at a 2' lift. do you think this is powerful enough to overflow a 60-80 gallon trashcan back into the tank? 2'' for the gravity return sounds good i think i got it.

Im going to have to make a thread of the build with tons of pictures and prices.. im trying to do it cheap and effectively but i dont have money to heat it so im just waiting till temps improve here... :nilly: I hope the fish are as excited about this as i am :P...

anyone know a "cheap" way to heat 300G of water?

In FLA you could try a DIY solar heater.

TSN, Gar, Snapper, and Pbass are going to tax a 300 gal.

Is this a GO senario?

I think I'll stay with the TSN,gar, and turtle.I didn't plan on this being a go but I would like to upgrade in the future I know it will be taxing but I think with the better pump and larger filtration it will be okay the snapper won't go in for another year but the fish will go in asap. When the tsn and far yet bigger I'd like it to be the snapper and P bass only. The TSNand tar will go in a seperate pond. Sry if there are mistakes I typed this on my iPod but I think thy will have a few years in the 300tye turtle is going to the 55 he will be fine for a year or two. Thank you for the in put

While I was moving and building my current pond, I had several 300 gal. stock tanks at my rental house. They are awesome, (the bottom bung makes for easy WC's.) After I finished my pond, I sold 1 of the 300's to a buddy that put his HUGE snapper in it. He is currently 18"+ carapace and loving the 300.

well im hopeing everything likes it although my snapping turtle is only 3-4 inches in carpace but the catfish is getting big fast and his current tank is too small but when the weather gets warmmer ill set the pond up...
