Hey guys curious on what your thought are on running 2 fx5s on my new 300G. The tank will house a 15” silver arowana and a 12” Florida gar for now . I will be transporting an albino pacu and A giant gourami over that are in a grow out tank in the near future. I also have 2 Large sponge filters running in their current 125g And 1 other in the grow out tank. Anyone have any experience with gph on the fx5s I know it can vary depending on media and hose length. Will the sponge filters pick up the slack if the fx5s can’t keep up? I do have a 30 gallon sump i can add in. Thanks in advance!

Sponge filters work great as both a mechanical filter and biological filter. How much you feed and how often you feed your fish will determine if the sponges and 2 FX5 can keep up with the mechanical filtration.
The tank has an over flow box on it. The old owner ran it with a 30g Sump and one fx 5. He stated that when power went out it would wet his basement floor With a few gallons. It will be set up in my living room and my current fx5 has been reliable for many years. I’ve never had a Sump set up and I thought for simplicity sake that my 2 fx5s would be easy for me.
When you say the tank has a overflow box are you talking about a hob overflow or that the tank has bulkheads and a weir from the factory? The flooding was probably due to a improper setup of the plumbing. If you include some pictures of your tank and sump we could steer you in the right direction.
don't sweat the gph very much... that's really overrated, and i *know * that's a fact... gph is all about mech filtration which can easily be supplemented with wc's you are doing anyway... i keep saying it , and i'll say it again... over filtration is overrated.. it's more a sales pitch and mfk myth than anything else.. sorry it i offend anybody... *basic tank maintenance* is the key to fish health ....
to finish mt thoughts : 2 fx5's stuffed with media *will be more than enough*....as a matter of fact one fx5 with your sponge filters will be enough, you could supplement flow with poweheads...
It’s drilled on both ends of the tank on the bottom with a glass overflow box only over one hole. The other hole was not being used. I have a 30 gallon Sump with a pump that came with the tank. I loose power at my house pretty often, usually Only for A brief period. I was just thinking maby the fx5s running together would be a more simple set up for me that I’m familiar with. The tank was previous salt water. The Sump has a very large open area with only one baffle in it. I didn’t know if it would make sense if all my media is Basically submerged Throughout the entire Sump. I can post pics when I get home tonight. I’m also not to sure on how to stop the Sump from running dry. I’ve been reading about regulating with the return valve valve. In my head it seems the same amount of water I pump out Of the Sump will make it over the over flow and back through the return so how could my return or my pump out run each other if return pipe diameter is sufficient?
