Hi everyone.
Relatively new to the cichlid game, but am setting up a 300g and would like to hear some thoughts on stocklist.

15 convicts (will remove some once breeding pairs form)
6 silver dollars
2 severums

To be definitely added:
Oscar.
JD.

Was also wondering what other big cichlids could work?
Texas? Jag? Gold Saum? Blue Acara?

Thanks for your input

With 300G's to play with, I'd ditch the cons.
You can go bigger & meaner with this foot print.(But thats just me :naughty:)
If you're after a cichlid with similar size as a con consider HRP/Honduran Red Points, Salvinis,Firemouth.

Texas could work too, if you're planning on having both male & female you might end up with a tank full of hybrids, if you mix Texas, & Cons.

I like the idea of having sevs, there's a few nice colors morphs or you can even get wild.
Have you considered Uraus, or Mesonautas?
They might work with your Sevs in a "mildly agressive" setup.(I've seen similar setups work with the fish)
I would skip the Silver dollars, since the fish I listed sort of have the same body shape.
With these fish, you could still go for a smaller cichlid like say a HRP, or FM.
You could also have a nice bunch of cats for your clean up crew.

Get the fish that fit your fancy... find one that is "your favorite" check for ideal tankmates and go from there with a tank that size you have thousands of working combinations so suit your own desires and enjoy, Trial and error is fun and strange combinations often come out of it. You should have loads of fun and welcome to the hobby.

As time has progressed I have tried to get away from common types of fish that you typically see everywhere (no offense like oscars).

I do have a Midas who will stay with whatever set up I go with because he is oddly peaceful and I'm just too attached. I have been leaning a lot more toward fish not seen as often and possibly considered more peaceful.

I have been looking at fish like the vieja fenestratus (just added 2 to my tank), cichlasoma pearsei, cichlasoma bocourti, parachromis loisellei.

i have a jaguar and hes a very cool fish. hes in a 75 by himself and it will stay that way i recently tried adding a midas and well that didnt work out. so if you want a good aggressive fish the jaguar is the way to go. i would also suggest a flowerhorn or texas. you cant go wrong with these. Also if your leaning toward super aggresive...go for a black nasty, dovii, umbi, or beani these are awesome predators.the beani is the meanest and the most rare. something i would love to have but ive only seen one in person.

I wouldnt keep pairs but definitely a colony of male midas, amarillos, red isletas, trimacs, xiloaensis, and devils...... pairs get too aggresive even in a 300 gallon tank..
