I wanna start a species tank of Vieja (either syn or bifa) do you think this could work in a 300G and how many would I need for the aggression to be spread out well w/o one getting beaten down on all the time. I've kept bifas before and w/o adequate tank space (<150G) and with only one or two other viejas lets just say the others didn't last long with their conspecific rage. Suggestions and comments welcome

IMO Nutty has one of the best looking Vieja/ similair temperment species tanks ive seen. Not sure exactly, but looks upwards of 300gal.

If you have all 1 specie thats going to lead to breeding, which is going to lead to over-aggression. Pending on the footprint, Id suggest getting 6-7 males as juvis and letting them grow up together with some dithers and a pleco. With this method you will have the highest rate of succession for long term. Good luck with your Vieja stocking, they make excellent tanks.

Yes, Nutty has an insane tank! It is beautiful and balanced. With a 300gal you should be able to pull off something similar. But with species pairs, I would say two pairs with some much smaller and peaceful tankmates would work out best. Since Syns and Bifas get so big, two breeding pairs would probably be the limit. I just started a new tank with a few Viejas added, a Syn and two Pink Fenestratus. They are still small but there is no problems. I'm trying to keep only males. I am thinking of getting another Vieja but my next tank will not be as large as yours. My max is 220-240gal. I really want to make sure that I have a life long stock with minimal aggression. So I have to choose my next cichlid wisely. Another vieja may not be in the cards for me but I would really love to see your 300gal. tank with two pairs of Vieja. That would be awesome!

From the video I can see why you want some. They are beautiful! I'm sticking with an all male tank to limit aggression. I think it will allow me to get more variety than i could with pairs. But i also realize that things may change once they get bigger. I hope it remains the way it is now. I love it. Again with 300 gal., you can get away with a lot more than I can. I think you should do the all male tank with some small tankmates with colors that compliment the Viejas.
