i have a 300g and i was wondering what size sump i should use i got a spare 60g and a spare 100g let me know thanks and what pump to get thanks 300g gots 2 1 1/2 drilled im back

I would go for a standard 90g just because they are common enough to be really cheap, 75g would work as well. Pack it full of plants and enjoy.

I had a 55g sump and a mag 24 pump on my 300. Sump had 25g of bioballs in it. It was stocked with about 10 fish all in the 16-28" mark. My water was perfect with waterchanges every 7 days

I've never seen a "really cheap" 90 gal... we may define "really cheap" differently though :P

Eith one (60 gal or 100 gal) will work... there are 10,000 variables that must be considered before a detailed response could be offered...

A simple place to start, what do you expect out of your sump?

Is this sump going to be the only filter? Are you going to provide all of your water movement with the sumps pump or are you going to supplement with powerheads? Will the sump be "bio only" (which seems painfully common on this forum)? Do you like the idea of a refugium? Will you take the wet/dry approach or stick with submerged media? Do you want the sump to give you crystal clear water or just pull out the big stuff? etc, etc, etc....

I say cheap b/c I saw one at petsmart with lids and lights for like 230 bucks, which means even if you buy a spankin new one its not much more than your average FX5. I'm sure there are some great deals to be had on craigs list. If not a 90 I know for a fact you can snag 75's all day long on CL for next to nothing.

2 fx5 and sump i want crystal clear water and im thinking filter floss and bioballs and biomedia

Well here is an Idea, since you are allredy running 2x FX5's which if you put poly fill in the top tray and ceramic rings in the bottom two would handle your bio load no problem. Why dont you just run a filter sock in your sump and then either add a series of algae scrubbers or a bunch of horrnwart or other fast growing free floating plant to your sump so you dont have to worry about NO3/PO4 either? If it dosent totaly eliminate your NO3/PO4 it will drasticaly reduce it. Benifits would be helthier fish/system, no algae in the tank, you can over feed a bit and not worry about it, and you can get away with fewer smaller water changes. You still have to do WC's to re-mineralize the water and vac out the doo doo but instead of having to do 50% a week b/c your NO3 is off the charts you can get away with 20% every other week b/c you plants are exporting the excess nutrients. I think you will find this thread an intresting read. This guy here is running a over stocked 210 (I think) completely on plants, no bio media and all nitrogen sources read zero.
