has anyone tried to convert a big plastic drum (with those round lid fasteners) into a giant canister filter? just throwing ideas out it may not be new but i didnt find it in my searches.... or is it just impractical when you might as well do a sump... im just thinking that it would be more quiet.

You could probably do it as long as the head is less than 5 feet and the drum's lid will fasten very well. Three feet of head will blow a lid off of a very well-sealed 5 gallon bucket. Eight feet will make it crack. If you have a 30 gallon "sump" drum (they sell them at home depot and similar places in areas where basements flood) with a lid that bolts on around the rim, that might work. (Something like this)
