ok, so ive gotten the go ahead on starting a 30g reef tank at the end of august. my fiancees only condition is that we need to have some xenia (pumping/pulsing) coral.

so, anyone got any advice on these things, to be honest i havent done loads of research on them, butfrom what ive read they dont seem to be to hard to keep, just make sure they have room to spread.

but, with that in mind, we would like to keep a pair of false clowns, a smaller start fish (if possible) and then the standard crabs/snails/ and some shrimp.

so, what do you think, is this possible, if so what are some good corals to go with this sort of set up.

The tank is 36" long x 12" wide x 16" deep. the lighting will likely be a 36" 250 watt from http://www.marineandreef.com/shoppro/metal_SunPod.htm thanks to the advice of grmanrocks.

might end up setting up a refugium, if i can figure it out (is the plumbing done just like a sump, because that would be easy) but i dont really know much about that at the moment.

thanks for any input.

You shouldn't have any problems keeping xenia. If anything you'll have more of a hard time keeping it from taking over your tank. :D Just keep it in the flow of your powerhead and you'll be fine.

By the way, don't pay for your xenia...people give it away for free. If you have a local club you can get some stalks for free. For example, I'm a member of the Boston Reefers Society and people are always posting that they have some for free...just a though.

Here's a good source: http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-02/ac/feature/index.php

thats good to know about the xenia.

are there certain things that go well with it, or certain corals/fish i should avoid.

most angels and butterflies, and most urchins and thick bodied starfish

most angles wouldnt really fit in a 30g would they. but thanks, is there any other info you can give me, like what, if any, would be some good star fish for such a small space.

thanks

whoops, i'm dumb i meant dwarf angels.

most fromia star are reef safe and stay pretty small, also the burgundy sea star.
most urchins are only not safe with corals, they will leave other inverts alone.

I give my xenia away grows like a wwed under 130 watt pc's never mind halides.

Xenia's under a halide in tank that shallow would probably pick up the light and start running around the room.

They have some of the lowest light requirements there are. So yeah they would thrive under a halide. I have noticed in friends tanks that when they did upgrade the lighting when they got into stoneys or prepared to add maxima clams that their xenias just shot up. almost overnight it seemed. They live ALMOST enitre off dissolved organics. I've read similar things about kenya tree coral. So they are rather easy to keep and again have crazy low lighting reqs.
