30g stocking?

I am trying to stock a 30g tank for my sons room...I am trying to look for a good setup...I just wanna put one cichlid in the 30g for life....but i want to surround him with a couple tiger barbs and a pictus catfish....I dont want rams or breeding pairs....Something semi aggressive....any ideas?

Rams or other SA dwarf cichlids are very colorful, and don't get big. You could add a few as well.
