Hello folks,

I'm trying to figure out a stocking list after a long layoff from the hobby. The tank is 32 gallons, 24"L x 18"W x 18"H.

I figure this is a little too small for angels, but should be enough room to keep dwarf cichlids. I am especially interested in laetacara and apistogramma. I basically have no experience with dwarf cichlids though, and I am hoping that those with experience can give me some advice on stocking possibilities. The tank will be moderately to heavily planted, and I imagine I'll add a school each of tetras and small corys.

As a secondary question, does anyone know of a good place to buy dwarf cichlids? I haven't seen laetacara curviceps for sale anywhere.

Any advice is hugely appreciated!

An interesting tank shape. If you heavily plant the tank, you could do two pairs of a small Laetacara, Apistogramma or Mikrogeophagus along with some tetras and cories. Gage at Cichlid Connection is the only person I currently know with access to curviceps, but I don't like the guy's customer service and the minimum purchase is $50, so you'd have to buy a lot of fish. Try speaking with your LFSs to see if they can order you some. Most stores place their orders on Mondays or Tuesdays for Thursday or Friday deliveries. Wetspot out in Oregon has some wild caught araguaiae "Buckelkopf", which is a very beautiful Laetacara species IMO. They also stock many species of Apistos that might interest you. With so many Apisto species out there, most LFSs can get their hands on at least a couple species easily.

Laetacara can be rough on conspecifics, I would buy a group of juvies & rehome the rest after a pair forms. You could do a 1M/2F trio of apistos. You'll be fine with cories & tetras. I'd go for smaller tetras though - cardinals or rummy nose.

Look on Aquabid for your laetacaras & apistos. Like Mythic Figment said, Wetspot would be a good seller to deal with. They sell alot of diff types of small tetras too, maybe save on shipping if you get tetras from them as well.

Beesides Wet Spot, Aquaticclarity has at least 15 different Apistos and has Laetacara on the list
There is also a web site called apistogramma.com dedicated to dwarf cichlids with an obvious emphasis on Apistogramma.

So it seems like a pair of laetacara or a trio of apistogramma, or maybe a pair of each is what I could do. Looks like apistos are readily available, but I'll have to be really patient if I want laetacara, especially curviceps. Thanks for the tips guys!

Make sure you see a pic of the curviceps before you buy them, most 'curviceps' sold in the US are actually dorsigera as they are bred in the Florida fish farms.

Usually with that common name, once in a while you will see thayeri sold as such ... but that pic they have on the site is a curviceps. So hard to say.
