Hi all! Here is my stocking list for a 35 Gallon Freshwater Aquarium: 4 Angelfish, 6 Swordtails, 1 Red Tailed Black Shark, 2 Red Rainbows, 1 Turquoise Rainbow, 1 Black Ghost Knife Fish, 1 African Butterfly Fish, 4 Glass Catfish, 2 Kissing Gourami's and 2 Yellow Rainbows. I know that this tank is seriously overstocked, but presuming I get all of these fish when they are relatively small, how long do you think it would take for this tank to start getting crowded and not looking nice? And as another question, if I added a fire eel, by how much would it reduce that time?

Thanks all!

PS: I'm new to the forums - so hi everyone, hehe. It's great to be here!

I would say at most 6 months and the a 150+ tank will be needed to house the Fire Eel. BGKs can reach 18 inches and Fire Eels 30 inches. If you ditched those two it could last a lot longer.

Why are you measuring how long the tank will last? Go for a stocklist that will be able to stay long term

Thanks so much for the reply! Firstly - i'll ditch the fire eel until I get that bigger tank because I wasn't sure whether to get one of them or not anyway, lol. And would you say 6 months even without a fire eel? Because i'm hoping to get it up to a year. And see even when they are babies, do you think it'd look overcrowded? :)

Thanks for the reply! It's quite complicated - I am allowed to get a larger aquarium in a year's time without any question -- so I guess you could say this fish tank is sort of like a 'temporary household' (just until I am right into the hobby and can get a larger aquarium). :)

you'll have a serious problem in a couple months. If you remove the knife, fire eel, african butterfly fish and a couple rainbows you'd be fine for a while. there is way way to much in a 35 even at the beggining. the fire eel will require a very wide tank. so will the bgk. Do not buy fish that you dont already have a tank for.

Idk about the Butterfly fish but if you replaced the BGK and Fire Eel with a Peacock Eel and African Brown Knife it could last a year with 2 50% weekly water changes and great filtration.

Thanks for the advice, archers! Firstly, i'll definitely remove the eel, and I could remove a Yellow Rainbow and a Red Rainbow too. But i'm not sure about the Knife and the Butterfly - because they were two of my favourites, to be honest. So, this would be the updated stocking list: 4 Angelfish, 6 Swordtails, 1 Red Tailed Black Shark, 1 Red Rainbow, 1 Turquoise Rainbow, 1 Black Ghost Knife Fish, 1 African Butterfly Fish, 4 Glass Catfish, 2 Kissing Gourami's and 1 Yellow Rainbow. However, after that, I really can't think what else I would want to take out. Would all of these fish fit comfortably and spaciously in a 35 gallon tank for a year? Or no?

Vanimal - Whoops! Apologies as it appears I missed that post there. See if I just get rid of the eels altogether, removed 1 (or would I need to remove 2?) rainbowfish and kept the Black Ghost Knife Fish, would that 2 50% water changes weekly and great filtration rule still apply and do me for a year? Thanks!!

Sorry for the triple post, just wanted to change the stocking list to this:

Thanks guys - it's great to see so many people trying to help me. I really appreciate it! :D

kissing gouramis get decent sized, not sure on the growth rate. You might run into aggression with your angelfish, i have problems with my four in a 55. again, i would look into a bigger tank asap as i'm not sure of the growth rates on these and you should avoid stunting these fish for the sake of their health.
