Is a 350 magnum filter engh for a 90 gallon with 2 tiger oscars alone? Or is the filter not enough?

I have a Mag 350 on my 75. All I have to say is that it is a major POS. My water flow is no more than a trickle. I have had to add more filtration to it, and am getting replacing it with a sump soon, and will use it to gravel vac only.

Honestly if you have not bought it, or have not set it up yet take it back, and exchange for a Fluval and spend the extra.

If you can not return then the only advice I can give is to reduce the head loss as much as possible by getting it as close to the rim of the tank as you can while keeping the quick connects.

These “pseudo” canisters have their place, I guess.
Being the sole filter on any tank wouldn’t be my choice

My first canister was a Mag 350 (back in the mid-80's). I would'nt use one now as my only filter. There are other canisters out there with much better media capacity and options. I use one now as a pre-filter and pump for a UV unit.

I think one of the best benefits of a Mag 350 is the ZERO bypass. If you're getting bad flow, clogged media is the likely culprit.

I would highly suggest you get an AC110, Emp 400, Fluval 405 or even an FX5 if you have the money and can squeeze it under the tank as a main filter. I personally LOVE my Mag350, but only as a secondary filter. IDK what John is saying about it being a POS, if it trickles then it probably needs to be cleaned or maybe the top of his tank is like 9' in the air or somthing. No it dosent pump seventeen THOUSAND gph but mine probably pushes a legetimate 275 ish gph on average with roughly 5 feet of head space? The thing I like about them is if you want to run the micron cartridge, you really cant beat that kind of mechanical filter. Ditom filter you say? You can load the 350 with DE and bam its a daitom filter! Chemical? you can get the basket and load it with whatever you like, carbon, peat, crushed coral etc. it could even be filled with substrate pro/ceramic rings and used as a bio filter in a pinch. But it really dosent make a good primary filter on anything biger than a 40 gal imo. However if you have other filters takeing care of the bio load like AC110's or w/e having that 350 running mech really polishes out the water nicely. Not a great primary filter but it sure is a handy supplamental filter.

I stuffed the inside basket of my Mag 350 with bio-balls... Is it worth it? I have it together with a whisper 300 on one of my 55 gallon.

If you were going to try and use the mag 350 as your bio filter I wouldnt use bio balls. They dont have very much surface area given the tiny size of the mag350's basket. I would suggest a ceramic media like substrate pro or ceramic rings. Those are pretty pricy though. Was your whisper 300 just not converting amonia/nitrite fast enough?
